RIVET
RIVET
Rivet, also known as pocket studs, decorative studs, are one of the most common metal accessories in the clothing, footwear, leather goods, and bag industries. Invented by Jacob Davis, a 19th-century tailor, who noticed miners and laborers often complaining about the easily torn edges of their trouser pockets, he conceived of using metal rivets to reinforce these stress points, thus inventing modern jeans.
Today, the main purpose of rivets consists of
- Strength reinforcement: Especially suitable for high-stress areas such as pocket corners and sides of jeans, effectively preventing fabric tearing.
- Aesthetic and decorative: As an exposed decorative component, rivets can greatly enhance the appearance and design details of a product.
We specialize in the manufacturing, electroplating, and quality inspection of all types of rivets. Providing diverse styling design, stable and durable hardware accessories that meet brand specifications, and can create exclusive rivet designs to match the brand style. The size, shape, material, and surface treatment can all be customized to meet your needs.(Specifications)
Rivets are used to tightly press, fix, and connect two or more material layers (such as thick fabric or leather) together to form a strong, non-removable joint. They are widely used for reinforcing stress points and embellishing design details.
They can be broadly categorized into the following main types, the most common of which is the Double-Cap Rivet
| Types | Features and Descriptions | Application Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Double-Cap | The most common type has smooth, aesthetically pleasing surfaces on both sides of the rivet cap and post, making it visible even when the fabric is turned inside out or on both sides, suitable for products where both sides are exposed. | Exquisitely designed leather goods, stylish bags, and products with consistent appearance on both sides. |
| Single-Cap | Only the cap side is exposed and is usually lower cost. Simply fitted with ordinary non-cap rivet post, hidden inside the leather and fabric. | Various types of bags and luggage are fitted with this product on the outside or inside for both fixation and aesthetic decoration. |
| Decorative | The top features engravings, patterns, gemstones, or special shapes (pyramid, square, dome, etc.). | Branded designer items, trendy leather bags, and distinctive clothing. |
Composition of the rivet structure
1.Cap / Head
Function: Exposed on the surface, used for aesthetics, style presentation, and stress distribution.
Appearance: Dome, Flat , Cone, Pyramid, etc.。
2. Post / Nail
Function: Nails with hollow or solid tubular structures are riveted to the cover after passing through the material, providing structural strength.
Structure: Hollow or Solid
How to use rivets
Installation typically requires the use of a rivet fitting mold, which tightly bonds the "rivet cap" and "rivet post" to the fabric through mutual impact and pressing. The pressure causes the softer base material to deform and expand outward, locking tightly with the concave structure of the rivet cover, thus permanently securing the fabric. You can think of it as a permanent fastener/rivet.
The material of the rivet primarily determines its durability and appearance:
Material
Copper: The most common and durable material, it can be made to have good oxidation resistance through electroplating and coating.
- Inner Diameter: Directly affects the riveting quality and durability. Matching the correct material and wall thickness can achieve controlled expansion and avoid pipe bursting, loosening and surface damage.
Iron: Low cost. It is usually electroplated (such as nickel plating, copper plating, bronze coloring, etc.) to prevent rust and beautify.
Size considerations
Diameter:The diameter of the rivet face determines the size of the decorative surface.
- Inner Diameter: Directly affects the assembling quality and durability. Matching the correct material and thickness can achieve controlled expansion and avoid pipe bursting, loosening and surface damage.
Post / Nail:The length of the rivet post must be slightly longer than the total thickness of the fabric or leather to be riveted to ensure that the two parts are fastened securely when joined.

In product design, rivets not only play a structural role but also serve as crucial details in shaping style and brand identity. Through combinations of different shapes, proportions, and surface finishes, rivets are integrated into the product structure, becoming a visual focal point and creating layers and rhythm in bags, shoes, clothing, and accessories. Riveting, on the other hand, uses assembling process to tightly bond two or more layers of material, forming a strong and irremovable connection point, widely used in thick fabrics, leather, and industrial textiles.
Bags/Leather Goods
- High-tensile fixing points at the bag opening and the ends of the shoulder straps.
- Reinforcement of the connection structure between the handle and the main body.
- Multi-layered leather or leather & webbing structure.
Clothing / Denim
- Stress concentration area at the corner of jeans pocket.
- Reinforcement of seams on leather jackets and overall.
- To prevent the seams from tearing due to long term of wearing.
Shoes and boots
- Shoe upper structural reinforcement and decorative fixing
- Secondary anchor point of the lacing path
- The connection between the pull tab end and the leather
Outdoor / Industrial Safety
- Tool kits and equipment with fixed structures
- Tent, canvas and thick fabric anchor points
- High humidity, long-term outdoor use
Pet supplies
- The main stress connection point between the collar and the leash
- To avoid safety risks caused by loose metal parts
